AC units are not designed to last more than 10 years.
How old is your AC unit? If you can’t remember, or it’s been more than 10 years, it’s time to look at upgrading. One benefit of upgrading your unit is that newer models are generally much more energy-efficient, which can save you money in the long-term.
When upgrading, look for an Energy Star label - it can save you up to 20% off your energy costs.
Are you starting to hear strange noises?
When your unit starts to make nonstandard noises, like squealing or clanking, it’s time to get it checked out. These noises could be signs of bigger issues like a belt slipping or broken motor bearings.
While repairing may seem like the logical next step, a professional needs to inspect the unit and help you determine when it’s more cost-effective to replace, especially when you consider other factors like the unit’s age. Bearings and belts are costly repairs and may not completely resolve the internal problems.
What’s that smell?
The air coming out of the unit should be clean and neutral. Smoky/burning smells are indicative of a deeper issue that may mean it’s time to replace.
R22 Freon coolant is being phased out.
Older AC units used a type of coolant known as R22 (Freon). While this was industry standard, this coolant also causes damage to the ozone layer, among other environmental impacts. Machines that use Freon are being phased out in favor of R410A (Puron), meaning older units may not even be eligible for repair and must instead be replaced. As of January 2020, Freon is no longer available on the market.
Check your SEER rating.
Most modern AC units will have a SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) rating that rates the unit’s efficiency. The US Department of Energy regularly updates energy standards, and the current SEER rating minimum is 13. If your existing unit is below 13, it is most likely inefficient and outdated and can be replaced with a more efficient unit that will lower your energy bill.
